Our story

Did AI save my dad's life?

I think it might have.

I've been building with AI for a while now. A few months ago I discovered OpenClaw. Probably more confident than I should have been, I dove in — and even bought a new Mac Mini to make sure I was committed.

It paid off. I now have around 10 agents running across two OpenClaws: my Mac Mini, and my Akamai Technologies Cloud environment. The one I want to tell you about is the one I built for my dad. ♥

My dad is in his 80s and never really took to texting. He tried, but his messages would often be long, rambling, hard to follow. People teased him about it, so he just stopped. He also has a growing list of health challenges.

So I built him an agent named Angel. I integrated with Telegram so it was different than the old text messages.

Every hour during waking hours, Angel checks in with my dad. Simple, friendly questions like:

"Hey Jerry, what have you eaten today and how are you feeling? Give me a number — 10 means feeling great, 1 means call someone."

The conversation that changed everything

Dad (morning)

"I had eggs and sausage for breakfast I dont feel good I think I have a cold call it a 3"

Angel

"I logged your breakfast with a note that you're not feeling well — sounds like a cold coming on. Hope it eases up soon, Jerry."

Dad (next morning)

"Im feeling worse"

Angel

"I logged that your cold has gotten worse. Hope it eases up soon."

I'm in the group chat with my dad and Angel, so I saw those messages. Something about "feeling worse" two mornings in a row. This didn't sit right with me. I called my parents and asked them to see the doctor.

Later that evening, Dad reported back:

"Angel I went to the hospital today and I have a mild case of pneumonia dinner was butternut squash give me a 3"

Angel replied:

"I'm sorry, Jerry. I logged butternut squash for dinner, and a 3 with a note that the hospital confirmed mild pneumonia. Please take it easy tonight — and if your breathing gets worse, you have chest pain, confusion, or feel weaker, get help right away. 💙"

I teared up reading that.

If Angel hadn't been checking in every morning, Dad probably would have waited it out at home until it became serious. But because Angel showed up — where I can't — consistently, warmly, without judgment, and without ever teasing him about his punctuation — my dad was willing to talk.

Complicated feelings, simple gratitude

I have complicated feelings about AI. I worry about the jobs it will displace. I worry about what it means for my kids and grandkids. These are real, legitimate concerns.

But today, I'm just grateful. Grateful that my dad is on the road to recovery. Grateful that Angel never rushes him, never judges his grammar, always shows up, and may have played a role in saving my dad's life.
